This love affair that America has with cops has got to come to an end. If not for our own sake, then for the sake of our children and grandchildren. We need to create a society in which no one is untouchable and no one is believed to be above the law, a society that protects its most vulnerable citizens, not one that rushes to defend its most powerful ones. A society in which people know they have real options for finding justice, and that the system can and does work in their favor, when it’s supposed to.
If we had created a society like that, Pegg would be sitting in prison today, and Fredricks would have found a way to heal from his pain, before that final eruption. Instead, Pegg is dead and Fredricks is soon to be sentenced to a lengthy prison term.
Was justice served? Not at all. It’s just one more example in a very long line of examples of failed justice.
